Electromagnet with Nails

A solenoid with an iron core sits next to a box of nails.

1. Close the switch.

2. Bring the box of nails close to the iron core.

The nails will leap from the box and cling together to the end of the core, as shown below:

A waterfall of nails sticks to the iron core of the solenoid.

1. Set the box down.

2. Open the switch.

The nails will fall from the core, as shown below:
