Siphon

A hose siphons water from an elevated beaker to a beaker at a lower position

Concept Overview:

1. Water seeks its level

2. Conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy; energy transfer

3. Equilibrium sought

Lecturer Procedure

Step(s) to Follow Expected Result

1. Suck enough water into the hose so that the water level will be over the maximum point.

2. Cap with thumb.

3. Place the end with your thumb over it into the lower beaker

4. Remove thumb

Water will flow into the lower beaker;

The force of gravity will pull the water downward.  The movement of water creates an area of decreased pressure in the portion of the hose located in the upper beaker.  The decreased pressure will create more suction of water into the hose.
