Pythagoras Cup

Concept Overview:

1. Demonstration of the siphon effect through the use of a trick cup.

Lecturer Procedure

Step(s) to Follow Expected Result
1. Fill the cup partially with colored water to show the students that there is no leak. The pythagorus cup has a water level equal to half that of the of the central tubing.
2. Continue to fill above the top of the circular formation in the center. The pythagorus cup has a depth of water greater than the height of the central tubing.  Water has left the cup via hole in bottom.
3. Watch as the cup drains completely due to the siphon effect created. Water continues to drain from the pythagorus cup through the central tubing.
