1. Measure the distance of the nail head from the piece of wood.

2. Raise the pile driver to the desired height (also measured)

3. Release the pile driver.

4. Remeasure the distance of nail head from piece of wood.

5. Complete calculations as necessary

The force of the driver on the nail head can be calculated.
