Low Temperature Behavior

Concept Overview:

1. Rigidity and brittleness are enhanced at very low temperatures

Lecturer Procedures

Step(s) to FollowExpected Result

1. Hold flower by the stem and immerse in liquid nitrogen.

2. Take the flower out and tap it on the tabletop

The flower will shatter into pieces

1. Immerse the ball in liquid nitrogen - continue to turn it over until the nitrogen no longer boils when in contact with its surface

2. Use the tongs to remove the ball

3. Quickly throw it very hard against the wall or floor

The ball will shatter into fragments

1. Bend the rubber tubing into a U shape

2. Immerse the U in the liquid nitrogen

3. Once frozen, remove from the nitrogen and pull on the non-frozen ends

The tubing will have stretchable portions on the ends with a hard kink in the middle
1. Place the end of a piece of tubing in the liquid nitrogenA stream of droplets of the liquid nitrogen will spew out of thee other end to a range of several feet

1. Place a marshmallow in the liquid nitrogen

2. Use the slotted spoon to remove it

3. Bite into the frozen marshmallow and exhale

It will appear as though smoke is coming from your mouth and/or nose
