Equipment: electric motor with variable speed output found in Set 4, Cabinet 2, Shelf 2, spherical glass vessel with stem on the bottom in Set 9, Cabinet 1, Shelf 2, mixture of mercury and dyed water in Room 4.

Procedure: A small amount of the mixture of mercury and colored water is poured into the spherical vessel which is then mounted on the vertical shaft driven by the motor. Be sure that the drive mechanism is adjusted for low speed when the motor is started. Speed up if necessary (but not too fast). Around the equator of the spinning vessel the mercury will be seen as a mirror-like band surrounded by the colored water.
