M-CM 5: Forces in circular motion

PIRA: Unknown

Equipment: White and yellow balls connected to a hand crank by springs. This device is located in Set 8, Cabinet 2, Shelf 3.

Procedure: Each of the balls is drawn toward the center by a spring. Each spring has the same length and spring constant. The balls painted yellow have less mass than those painted white (simulating cream and milk). If the crank is turned to spin the array of balls with increasing speed, the white balls can be seen to go to the outside first, followed at much higher spin rates by the yellow.
